'Spanish Eyes'

Black-Eyed Susan Vine
Thunbergia alata 'Spanish Eyes'

Anyone that knows me can tell you I’m absolutely terrible when it comes to growing things from seed. This is actually my third attempt to grow Black-Eyed Susan Vines from seed and I finally succeeded. This particular one is called ‘Spanish Eyes’ and the seeds were a birthday gift from my very dear friend Carol. My first tries at growing them was using seed from the traditional yellow flowered vine.

I love, love, love this vine and I hope it produces enough seed for me to replant them next year. It comes in a variety of colors and I can’t wait to get more of them. It is an annual in my area so I will have to clean up the dead vines every year and I’m not particularly thrilled about that fact. I’m hoping this won’t be a major chore so I won’t be discouraged from planting more of this charming little plant.

  1. I have always wanted to try growing this. I don't believe I've seen one with this coloring.

    1. Phillip,
Hopefully it will make seed. If it does I'll be sure to send you some. :0)If not you can still get them at Petals From the Past. That's where Carol bought them for me.

  2. Randy, you should have no problem with this vine from here on out, it is actually quite a thug here...I have the traditional yellow....it doesn't show up until late May early June though. It's not too bad to cut down the dead vine....

    1. Darla,
I would love it if it actually came back from the root ball. I don't know if the cold will kill it here or not?

    1. Dee thanks for your information on the daylilies. I'll be sure to give them a good feeding to help them out. Now that I think about it I'm not fertilizing near as much as I use to do it. They probably do need some vitamins. :0)

  4. Congrats on your seed success! I too do not have much luck with seeds. I think I am too quick to pull out the weeds and thus, seedlings get plucked as well. My hubby always accuses me of being an Instant Gratification gardener as I have no patience’s for things to grow from seed. LOL… These vines produce a beautiful bloom and I can see why you are happy with it…

    1. Not a single seed! I thought that was really odd. I know they have to come from some where. LOL
