Surgery Update 02/19/13

Get Well

Well,
I’m sort of back. :0) It’s been one week since my surgery and things did not go as anticipated. I’m doing just fine, but it was a little more involved than expected once they actually got in there and got to looking around. They found two different types of protrusions in two different places on the same side. Which explains why my abdomen and various other unmentionable parts feel like the Dr. played a round of golf while he was in there. I’m so grateful and happy he found it and I don’t have to go back later and get something else fixed. It only adds two more weeks to my healing time, but it seems like much longer when you are sitting around in the house looking outside at all the things that need to be done. I get to go back to work in a week and that will help keep my mind occupied. People have been telling me this is a good time to catch up on my reading. Ha! Try that when you are taking 6 Lortab 10 a day. I was doing well not to drool all over myself when I sat up. Nothing is worse than waking up from a deep sleep to find your face is lying in a cold pool of slobber. Eeeeeeeeeew! And don’t even get me started on the five o’clock shadow down there… feels like I’ve got a porcupine in my lap. Oh well, such is life and when things wear out we have to get them fixed. The great side of all this is my back pain has completely disappeared for the time being and there is a chance the only reason I was having it was because of the two hernias. Wouldn’t that be great? :0) So here I am, lookin’ all like Frankenbelly with 6 rows of sutures, but I’ll be back in garden hopefully pain free this year just in time for Spring. Yaaaaaaaaaaay! Many thanks to all my friends that have been such a great help. Love all of you guys!

P.S. I have a cool robin story to tell you when I feel more like doing a post. Best wishes and see you soon!

  1. I can imagine the porcupine. ha... I do hope you get to feeling well soon. Take care and don't get hooked on the loritabs. Scary thought but some people do.

    1. Not to worry my dear Lisa! I'm down to just taking one in the evening and I expect that to stop soon. :0)To begin with I was allowed to take them every 4 hours and believe you me I needed it. It didn't do much for the pain but at least it made me sleep through most of it.

  2. Hope you heal up soon, Randy.

Happy to hear that the surgery seems to have solved the hernias and the back pain, even if it was a little more involved than they thought going in.

Like you say, better to get it all fixed at once rather than in two separate trips.

As my father would say about some of his surgeries (including one for a hernia), "Patch, patch, patch..."

  3. I am glad you are doing better. I have only had Lortab once and it made me feel like I was levitating 3' above the bed. Please take care of yourself, your garden needs you.

  6. Hi Randy, Ooh your ordeal sounds painful. Thankfully you're on the healing side of it. The worst is behind you. I'll keep my fingers crossed that your back pain is a future no-show...ever! Wouldn't that be awesome? Love the bear and the flowers. Take care and rest up.

    1. Thanks Grace! Yes that would be fantastic! The bear card was from a dear friend that cooked for me while I was at my worst and the flowers are from my boyfriend. I thought the photo came out kinda cute. :0)

  7. You just got an exuse to be a lazy boy! Reading is a good thing and also making a list of things to do in the garden... or wait! How about making a list of all your plants? I made such list recently, and it was fun looking through all the labels and trying to remember what is planted and where. I created groups: front garden, back garden, etc. and I wrote the plants'names in alphabetical order within each group. Get well fast! Spring is coming!

    1. Tatyana you made me laugh! I actually made a list of all the plants when I was making the garden. I was putting in so much so fast it was necessary to keep a list not to buy the same thing twice. At one count there were over 400 different plants in the garden. Of course this last couple of years has seen half of them dying or being removed. I have GOT to figure out what I'm going to do with the bed I removed all the plants from. It's going to be empty this spring. I'm just uninspired as of late and I have never been that way before.

  9. Hi Randy, I hope you're feeling better very soon. And I hope you get to enjoy your convalescence a little bit, that you can just relax and dream about spring. (That's what I'd want to do.)

    1. Leslie, I never have been one to sit down and be still. I always feel like I need to be doing something. The odd part is I never seem to get anything productive done. LOL I'm TRYING to enjoy this time without feeling guilty.

  10. Randy, Randy, Randy, Randy,

I’m away from the blog and when I return you have done this! What am I going to have to do to get you to listen? Am I going to have to come down there and follow you around with a mist bottle and every time you do something sprits you and say “NO, Bad Randy, Sit”.

OK, all silliness aside, I hope you are much improved and well on your way to a speedy recover and will be back up to full steam shortly. I well be most happy to hear that this will have helped / cured your back issues, this would be such a wonderful bonus “side effect”.

Not much more to say but, wait till that 5 o’clock shadow starts to itch ,don’t ask :-) - gary

So sorry to hear the surgery was more involved than you thought it was going to be! I hope you feel better soon and are pain-free once you recover. Getting over a surgery is not easy.

    Thanks for your trellises link!

  13. Gosh Randy your surgery sounds much more involved than originally thought. I am glad you are doing well. Take it easy. Abdominal surgery is never a good thing. This from a lady who has had four-I feel your pain. Please get well soonest!

  15. Dear Randy ! .. I have been so wrapped up in my own business I totally forgot about your back surgery (being a fellow back surgery patient as well .. they always find more wrong by the time they get in there , is so TRUE!)
I am so happy you are feeling better and hopefully all will go well with your gardening .. just do NOT over do it!!
As if I follow my own advice after compressing that femoral nerve .. aaarrrggghhh !!!
I love that I have given you a wee bit of enthusiasm for creating a lavender bed!! .. I have lavender all over the place but the ring of Provence lavender really makes me smile .. and the fact, so far the Provence keeps coming back each year!
For now .. rest easy (yes the medication thing can make us loopy .. you made me laugh with your story : )
Plan what type of lavender you think will work best and most attractive for you and ENJOY !!
    Joy : )

  17. Take your time and heal correctly. If you rush the process, you could have a setback. Am glad you are pain free and hopefully, you shall be for some time to come.... Spring will bring great new things...
